HUD Certified 8 hour Homebuyer Education Class

Own the HOU offers the HUD-Certified 8-Hour Homebuyer Education Class — a comprehensive course taught by HUD-certified housing counselors that walks you through every stage of the homebuying process. You’ll learn how to read and improve your credit, how lenders determine what you can borrow, what mortgage options are available to you, and what to expect from contract all the way through closing.
When you complete the course, you’ll receive an official Certificate of Completion — a requirement for nearly every Down Payment Assistance (DPA) program in the Houston area. The certificate is valid for 12 months. If you’re hoping to use city, county, or lender-sponsored assistance toward your down payment or closing costs, this certificate is required.
This class typically costs $50 in person and $100 virtually. When you register through Own the HOU, the in-person class is free.
